BOSTON – During the magical spring and summer of 1966, 23 student-athletes led the Northeastern baseball program to its finest set of accomplishments to date: its first-ever Greater Boston College Baseball League (GBCBL) title, its first-ever NCAA District I crown, and its first-ever College World Series (CWS) appearance.
Â
Having earned their then-school record, 18th victory, by cruising past Boston College, 10-2, at Fenway Park in the District I championship game, the Huskies became one of the final eight teams in the country left competing for a national title. NU advanced on to Omaha, Nebraska, where the Huskies shared the spotlight alongside four-time national champion Southern California, two-time titleholder Texas, and 1959 champion Oklahoma State, as well as power programs Arizona, North Carolina, Ohio State, and St. John's.
Â
Fifty years later, the Huskies' 1966 postseason run to the 20th annual National Collegiate Baseball Championship remains the greatest season NU has enjoyed during the program's now 96-year legacy.
Â
To honor the 23 alumni of the NCAA-deemed, "most surprising team in Northeastern's baseball history", the Northeastern baseball program will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of its 1966 College World Series team throughout the 2016 season.
Â
Beginning Jan. 13, fans are encouraged to join the Huskies here on GoNU.com for new editions of "From Fenway to Omaha", a web and video series that will air weekly on Wednesdays leading up to the start of the 2016 season. The series will center on interviews from members of the 1966 team, highlighting the player stories and experiences that go beyond the box scores from Northeastern's trip to the College World Series.
In addition to "From Fenway to Omaha", fans can also follow Northeastern baseball on Facebook (GoNUbaseball) and Twitter (@GoNUbaseball) as the Huskies share news clippings, statistics, fun facts, and more about the 1966 CWS team.
Â
The 50th anniversary celebration will culminate at Friedman Diamond on Saturday, April 30, when NU hosts a doubleheader against Central Connecticut State (11 a.m., 2 p.m.). During the game, members of the 1966 squad will be formally recognized for their contributions to Northeastern baseball in front of the brand new, John "Tinker" Connelly Pavilion, fittingly named after the Huskies' 1966 skipper.
