BOSTON -- Former Northeastern men's basketball guard
Vasa Pusica has signed a professional contract with KK Partizan, a team based in Pusica's hometown of Belgrade, Serbia, the team announced on Wednesday. The contract was signed for the remainder of the current season, with the option to extend it at the conclusion of the season.
Partizan competes in the Adriatic Basketball Association League, the EuroCup, and the Basketball League of Serbia. The team holds the most championships (21) in the history of the Basketball League of Serbia, the top tier basketball league in Serbia. Pusica previously played with Partizan's youth team before coming to the United States, winning the gold medal in the 2013 U-19 league and being named to the All-Tournament Team NIJT Euroleague 2012-13.
Pusica is coming off of his second-straight All-CAA First Team season, where he averaged 17.4 points, 4.1 assists, and 3.8 rebounds per game while making 40 steals and shooting .482 from the field as well as .399 from deep and .837 from the line in 27 games.
Pusica finished the conference season ranking fourth in the CAA in scoring (19.1 ppg), fifth in assists (3.9 apg) and third in steals (1.6 spg). He was also among the league's top-15 in field goal (.532), 3-point FG (.396) and free throw (.839) percentage in CAA play. The senior guard scored 20 or more points 10 times on the year, with eight of those coming in conference action, and finished the regular season by tallying double figures in 18 straight games, including each and every CAA game he took part in.
In his senior season, the Belgrade, Serbia native led the Huskies to the second-best conference record at 14-4, earning them the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament. The team charged through the tournament, dispatching No. 10 UNCW, No. 3 Charleston, and No. 1 Hofstra as they hoisted the trophy and earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2015. Pusica had 21 points on a career-high seven three-pointers in the title game versus Hofstra, leading the team to an 82-74 victory.
Pusica finished out his Northeastern career as the most prolific scoring two-year player in team history, amassing 1061 points in his junior and senior seasons. He was selected to the All-CAA First Team both years, twice finishing as the runner-up to Hofstra's Justin Wright-Foreman in Player of the Year voting.
The CAA foes recently teamed up with fellow All-CAA First Teamers Jarrell Brantley and Devontae Cacok to compete in the Dos Equis 3X3U National Championship, going up against graduating seniors from all 31 other NCAA Division I conferences. The CAA team went 7-0 as they won the Tournament, taking home the grand prize of $100,000 and earning the right to represent 3X3U at the 2019 USA Basketball 3x3 Open National Championship in Las Vegas.
