BOSTON – In search of its first victory of the season, the Northeastern men's soccer team will head to the west coast on Friday, Sept. 4, as NU will square off against its first ranked opponent of the season, No. 16 Stanford. Kick-off time between the Huskies and the Cardinal is scheduled for 10 p.m. EST (7 p.m. PST).
Â
LAST TIME OUTÂ
Northeastern's 1-0 lead courtesy of a 19th-minute goal by sophomore forward
Frantzdy Pierrot was nulled out by a late first-half goal by Temple as the Huskies opened their 2015 schedule with a 1-1 draw at home. Freshman
Chris Flores picked up his first collegiate point on Pierrot's goal, crossing a ball from the left corner of the box directly to the boot of the charging NU striker. The Huskies outshot Temple, 16-10, but tied the Owls in shots on goal at 3-3.
Â
CORNER POCKETÂ
NU accumulated eight corner kicks during its opening match of the 2015 season against Temple (Aug. 30), the most the Huskies have charted in a single game since Nov. 1, 2014 (10 vs. James Madison).
Â
FOUR FRESHMEN IN STARTING XIÂ
Head coach
Brian Ainscough started four members of his 2015 recruiting class during Northeastern's first game of the year against Temple (Aug. 30). Forward
Khori Bennett, midfielder
Chris Flores, defender
Andrew Lombard, and defender
Martin Nygaard made their way into the Huskies' starting 11 on opening day.
Â
LOMBARD JOINS U.S. U-20 MNTÂ
Freshman
Andrew Lombard was named to the U.S. Under-20 Men's National Team on Aug. 28 for the 2015 Stevan Vilotic-Cele Tournament, held from Sept. 3 to Sept. 7 in Serbia. Lombard and Cardinal midfielder Amir Bashti were two of the five collegiate players to be selected to the U.S. U-20 squad and are both anticipated to miss Friday's match between Northeastern and Stanford. Familiar with U.S. national team hierarchy, Lombard is a product of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy (New York Red Bulls Under-17/18) and also played with the U.S. Under-18 Men's National Team at a training camp during July.
Â
LAST TIME AGAINST RANKED COMPETITIONÂ
Coming in at No. 16 in the NSCAA top 25 poll, Stanford will be the first ranked team the Huskies will face since NU dropped a 2-0 decision to No. 23 UNCW on Oct. 18, 2014.
