BOSTON – During a picture perfect fall weekend in Boston, all eyes were focused on the 53rd Head of the Charles Regatta, where under sunny skies and warm temperatures saw the Northeastern men's and women's rowing teams take to the infamous Charles River for the prestigious annual regatta.
The story of the weekend for the Huskies was the performance in the men's championship eights. Northeastern, which had two boats entered in the race, had the first varsity of
Alexander Gass (coxswain) and
Braeden Camp (stroke seat) set the tone for the crew which went toe-to-toe with California, Harvard and Yale. While the Bears led through each split point, the Huskies were within striking distance of the Crimson and Bulldogs throughout the duration of the course, ultimately finishing fifth overall and fourth among collegiate crews at 13:41.305. Northeastern's second varsity, with
Matej Metkovic in the stroke, also had a strong afternoon to take 13th overall (14:01.380).
Launched in 1965 by Northeastern's first rowing head coach, Ernie Arlett, the three-mile race winds through the numerous turns and bridges of the Charles River, with races running both Saturday and Sunday.
The world-famous regatta attracts approximately 300,000 spectators each year, with nearly 9,000 athletes rowing over the course of the weekend. Alumni, current varsity rowers, and future Northeastern student-athletes alike compete in the storied contest every autumn, sometimes and very often against the best rowers in the world.
The Huskies got their big day started on Sunday with a strong performance in the men's championship fours, where coxswain
Tara Fish and stroke Leif Carlson led Northeastern to a sixth place finish overall with a time of 15:48.110 against the likes of California and Boston University.
On the women's side,
Madison Mailey and the Huskies went against a loaded field in the championship eights, placing 22nd overall (15:51.35) while the women's championship fours finished 13th in its race at 18:29.115.
In Saturday's action,
Chris Tzekov and the men's club eights placed fifth overall among a 36 boat field at 14:52.632 just behind Boston University and Harvard in first (14:32.582) and Harvard (14:36.046), respectively, while the men's club fours took seventh overall and third among collegiate crews with a time of 17:08.979 with Daniel Cone in the stroke seat.
The women's club eights battled Radcliffe, Yale, Penn and Syracuse for top-five positioning, with the Huskies ultimately taking sixth overall with a time of 16:59.310 with
Katie Cooper in the stroke seat.
The women's team will be back in action next Sunday for the Princeton Chase, while both Northeastern crews will close out the fall season with the Foot of the Charles on Nov. 12.
