First and second varsity boats reach petite finals at Doc Hosea Invite

Results | Lineups

CHERRY HILL, N.J. – Under perfect conditions, with a slight crosswind during the early morning heats and flat conditions for the late morning finals, the Northeastern women's rowing team opened the 2018 season on Saturday at the Doc Hosea Invitational on the Cooper River.

Northeastern finished ninth as a team (45 points) after the first varsity, second varsity and varsity four boats all reached the petite finals, while the second varsity four took sixth in the grand final and the third varsity fifth in their race. No. 15 Indiana edged Syracuse (102 points) for the team trophy with 108 points, while Syracuse finished ahead of both the Huskies and Pennsylvania (fourth, 80 points) to claim the Orange Cup.

The Orange Challenge Cup is a race featuring Northeastern, Syracuse and Penn, and is one of the oldest trophies in women's rowing, dating back to 1977. The Huskies have claimed nearly half of all Orange Challenge Cup races, winning 16. Penn is second in the series with 12 wins, followed by Syracuse with 11.

The first varsity kicked the morning off by narrowly missing a spot in the grand final during its heat, ultimately taking fourth (6:44.8), three seconds behind Pennsylvania (6:41.8) who nabbed the final spot in the grand. It was a four-boat race between No. 20 Minnesota, Navy, Northeastern and Rhode Island in the petite final later in the afternoon, with all boats overlapping throughout the 2000-meter course. Minnesota won the race with a time of 6:40.05, while the Midshipmen edged the Huskies by less than a second for second place (6:42.71), sending Northeastern to third (6:43.21.).

The second varsity found a similar result in its heat, missing a spot in the grand by two seconds. While the Orange ran away with the heat, winning by seven seconds, Northeastern and Penn went stroke for stroke looking to solidify their place in the grand final, but it was Pennsylvania who took the second and final spot with a time of 6:59.07 while Northeastern was third at 7:01.82, handling the other three crews by open water. NU would take care of business in the petite final, going head-to-head with Rhode Island before edging the Rams by 0.8 seconds at 6:55.9.

The varsity four went up against talented crews in its heat against Syracuse, Penn, Rutgers, Rhode Island and Boston University, with the Huskies taking fourth at 7:49.0. Later in the morning, the boat took fourth in the petite final at 7:59.71 in a race that was won by Navy at 7:43.11.

For the last three years, a larger regatta has been built around the cup, and named it the Doc Hosea Invitational in memory of long time U.S. National Rowing Team Doctor, Timothy Hosea. Doc Hosea was the US Rowing team doctor for the past 20 plus years. Anyone who rowed for the United States in those years benefited from his expertise, knowledge and professionalism. He would help any athlete in the sport of rowing regardless of the level, high school, club, collegiate.

Northeastern will take one week off before heading back on the road on Apr. 14-15 to race at Clemson.
