No. 5 Yale and No. 16 Radcliffe edge the Huskies in regular season finale

Results | Lineups

DERBY, Conn. – With very fast conditions throughout the racing schedule, the Northeastern women's rowing team closed out the regular season by going toe-to-toe with No. 5 Yale and No. 16 Harvard on Saturday morning at Gilder Boathouse.

"We knew the conditions, and the competition, were going to be fast today, so we challenged our crews to row a very aggressive race plan," said head coach Joe Wilhelm. "The two varsity eights executed it well, but came up just short of very good crews from Yale and Radcliffe. Our fours and the 3V haven't been in those lineups as long, but I am sure with another week under their belts they will be more than ready to execute at a high level next weekend at the Eastern Sprints. We have been building momentum and confidence in our racing throughout the spring and seem to be hitting our stride at the right time."

In the first varsity race with Haley Doucette as the coxswain and Madison Mailey in the stroke seat, the Bulldogs jumped out to an early advantage and controlled it from start to finish, while Radcliffe and Northeastern jockeyed for second. The crews went stroke for stroke through the course, but it was the Crimson which eventually edged the Huskies by a second at 6:10.10 to claim the Rowlands Cup.

There were similar results in the second varsity as Yale took control early, establishing an open water lead on the field, steadily extending it down the course. Northeastern and Radcliffe battled bow ball to bow ball all the way through the 2000-meters, but it was the Crimson that crossed the finish just ahead of the Huskies by less than a second at 6:21.8.

The varsity four, meanwhile, saw Yale with an open water lead on Harvard and Northeastern while the Crimson slowly took an open water lead on the Huskies as the Bulldogs won with a time of 6:50.9 to Radcliffe's 6:56.2 and Northeastern's 7:05.0.

The Huskies will be back in action on April 29 for the Eastern Sprints on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester.
