WORCESTER, Mass. – The Northeastern women's rowing team kicked off postseason competition on Sunday at the Eastern Sprints on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, advancing four of its five boats to the grand final while the first varsity finished fifth overall.
Northeastern entered Sunday ranked fifth in both the varsity eight and varsity four, while the second varsity and second varsity four boats checked in at No. 3. The third varsity was seeded fourth entering the weekend. The Huskies made their 38th appearance at the prestigious regatta against some of the region's top competition, and the 20th sprint under head coach
Joe Wilhelm, who has guided NU to the sprints in each of his seasons at the helm.
The first varsity, which cruised into the grand final by holding off Connecticut by 11 seconds in the heat while going stroke for stroke with Radcliffe, found itself in a tight race in the grand final. While the Crimson controlled the race from start to finish with a four second win over the field, the Huskies battled the likes of Dartmouth, Rutgers and Columbia all the way down the 2000-meter course, not allowing any boats to take open water leads, with the Huskies ultimately taking fifth at 6:35.457.
Northeastern and Rutgers controlled their morning heat in the second varsity to earn a spot in the afternoon grand final, with the Huskies edging Rutgers by nearly two seconds before meeting again in the grand. Again, it was Radcliffe that set the pace of the race to win by three seconds, but Northeastern and Rutgers competed the entire way to keep Radcliffe in their sights while jockeying for the second position. It was Rutgers, though, that prevailed by a deck at 6:48.514 to nip Northeastern at 6:48.858.
After earning a spot in the grand final in the third varsity by knocking off Boston College and Drexel by open water, the Huskies went up against a talented field in the afternoon in Dartmouth, Rutgers, Radcliffe, Connecticut and BC, with the Big Green and Scarlet Knights separating themselves from the remaining crews to fight for the top spot, leaving Northeastern in a two-boat race with Radcliffe for third. Radcliffe, though, made a late push to take third at 7:14.188 to Northeastern's 7:17.580.
The varsity four was sent to the petite final after being edged by Boston College in the morning heat by two seconds (7:37.464), before going stroke for stroke with Columbia and Rutgers in a spirited petite final to finish second and eighth overall with a time of 7:43.140.
Northeastern's second varsity four also found itself in the grand final after a successful morning heat before fighting Radcliffe, Temple, Rutgers, Columbia and Boston College in the afternoon, finishing sixth with a time of 8:04.092.
The Huskies will be back in action on May 13 for the CAA Championships in Camden, N.J.
