PENNSAUKEN, N.J. – For the fifth straight season, the Northeastern women's rowing is at the top of the CAA. The Huskies claimed their eighth-ever conference championship on Sunday morning with a seven-point win to earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.

Northeastern picked up wins in the first and second varsity boats, and took second in the varsity four to pick up 29 points towards the team title, besting Drexel (22 points) and Delaware (21 points). Villanova and Eastern Michigan tied for fourth with nine points.

"We've been waiting for a warm race day, and the conditions were great today," said head coach Joe Wilhelm. "Every year is different, and we lost the first race today and we know that we have to be ready for every race. Our seniors have made the difference this year and they're keeping everybody focused and holding everyone to a high standard. We're in a pretty good routine right now."

NU has now won CAA championships in 2009, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 following today's performance. Wilhelm was named the CAA Coach of the Year for the fifth straight season, while Haley Doucette, Madison Mailey, Jocelyn Mongillo and Eva Schlehr collected CAA All-Conference accolades.

"We came in pretty confident after a few very good weeks of hard training, and the team has really come together recently," said Mailey. "It was a great race from every boat out there today."

The first varsity needed a victory to secure Northeastern's fifth straight title, and did just that with a seven second win over the field. The Huskies took control out the race from the outset, creating separation between themselves and Delaware, maintaining its advantage throughout the 2000-meter course with a comfortable open water lead to win with a time of 6:57.859 to the Blue Hens 7:04.476 while Drexel checked in at 7:16.619 to take third.

The second varsity found similar success in their race, bolting out to an early lead and never looking back, dominating the five boat field and keeping Drexel in second place throughout. Northeastern went on to create a significant lead by open water to win at 13 seconds at 7:13.231 to the Dragons' 7:27.761.

Drexel gave the Huskies a scare in the varsity four as the schools made it a two-boat race for first early, separating themselves from Delaware, Villanova and Eastern Michigan. The crews went stroke for stroke all the way down the course, but it was a push from the Dragons in the middle 1000 that created a bit of open water on the Huskies, and Drexel was able to hold off Northeastern late to take the race at 8:07.209 to the Huskies' 8:13.714.

Northeastern took care of business in the third varsity race, a non-scoring matchup between the Huskies, Delaware, Villanova and Drexel, with NU winning by open water at 7:37.870, 13 seconds ahead of the field.

The Huskies will be off until Memorial Day Weekend when Northeastern travels to Sarasota, Fla. for the 2018 NCAA Championships.
