SARASOTA, Fla. – For the second straight day, the field at the 2018 NCAA Rowing Championships were forced to row twice as the Northeastern women's rowing team closed out its season on Saturday at Nathan Benderson Park, where both the second varsity and varsity four reached the C Final thanks to successful morning races.

Later in the afternoon, the second varsity took fifth in their final and 17th overall in the nation, consistent with its seed entering the championships, while the varsity four placed two spots above its seed with a sixth place finish in the C Final. The 1V went on to take second in the D Final and 20th in the nation, while the Huskies finished 19th as a team with 26 points.

Due to expected inclement weather, the championship schedule was condensed from three days to two, with both the semifinal and final races being contested on calm water with a light rain on Saturday. Northeastern made its fifth straight team appearance for the Huskies and the ninth appearance by the varsity eight since the NCAA regatta was launched in 1997.

Sunday also marked the conclusion of the collegiate careers for seniors Haley Doucette, Michelle EspositoMadison Mailey, Jocelyn Mongillo, Marina RemickValorianne Steier and Sarah Tokos. The group combined to help the Huskies to four consecutive CAA Championships, four straight trips to the NCAA Championships, and the program's first-ever appearance at the Henley Women's Regatta in 2017.

In the D Final for the first varsity, Navy bolted out to an early lead with Northeastern patiently waiting in fourth final Rhode Island and Jacksonville tried to keep up with the leader. The Huskies used a consistent pace to draw level and surpass both Jacksonville and URI for second place entering the middle 1000. From there, NU set it sights on the Midshipwomen while getting open water on the other crews, bringing itself within a half-length of Navy with 500 meters to go. Northeastern continued to push, chipping away at the deficit in the final strokes of the race, but ran out of water to settle for second place in the D Final and 20th in the nation with a time of 6:43.355.

It was a four boat race for three spots early on in the 1V morning C/D Semifinal with Wisconsin and Syracuse fighting for first and second along with the Huskies and Gonzaga in contention for the final spot in the C Final. Northeastern was strong in the third position 500-meters in with a three-seat edge over the Bulldogs, but it was Gonzaga that closed the gap approaching the midway mark of the race to pull even with NU for third. The Bulldogs maintained its pace to pull ahead of Northeastern with 750-meters to go, and despite the Huskies putting on a late push in an effort to draw level, it was Gonzaga that held on for the last spot in the C Final, sending Northeastern to the D Final at 6:54.782.

Wisconsin got out to a fast start in the C Final of the 2V, with Southern California and Indiana looking to catch up with Northeastern slightly behind in fifth. The Huskies worked to gain open water on sixth place Navy while keeping its bow ball on fourth place Washington State's stern. As the Huskies upped its stroke rate to 40 strokes per minute, Northeastern remained overlapped with the Cougars, but couldn't catch Washington State to finish fifth in the final and 17th in the nation at 6:46.379.

Northeastern's 2V was patient at the start of its morning C/D Semifinal as Rhode Island flew off the start to hold third place while Wisconsin and Washington State had the clear first and second positions. The Huskies, though, steadily worked their way down the course to pull even with the Rams for the final C Final spot at the 500-meter mark and never looked back, leading by a half-length at the 750 before slowly increasing the margin through the remainder of the course to take third at 6:57.327.

The Huskies got out to a quick start in the C Final of the varsity four, with Princeton and Syracuse in the first and second positions through the first 500 meters, but it was Navy, Southern California and Wisconsin who were able to overtake Northeastern and pull away from the Huskies, taking an open water advantage to keep NU in sixth to finish 18th in the nation at 7:54.120.

Earlier in the day, the varsity four semifinal saw Wisconsin and Southern California make it a two-boat race for first and second, respectively, leaving Northeastern and Gonzaga to duke it out for the final slot in the C Final. While it was the Bulldogs with the early edge on Northeastern for third, the Huskies went to work in the second 500 to overtake Gonzaga and establish nearly a full-length advantage. NU maintained the lead over the next 1000-meters before Gonzaga put on a late charge in the final strokes, but the Bulldogs ran out of water as Northeastern edged Gonzaga for third by 0.655 seconds at 7:44.188.
