Carie Graves (head coach 1988-98) had a distinguished rowing career as a member of multiple National Teams and was a gold medalist at the 1984 Olympics. 

After graduating from the University of Wisconsin, Graves started her coaching career at Harvard as head coach of Radcliffe crew, but soon made the move to coach at Northeastern in 1988. While on Huntington Avenue, she coached multiple Eastern Sprints medalists. In 1991, her second Varsity 8 won the Sprints. In 1998, she led her varsity crew to finish third at the Eastern Sprints and fourth at the NCAA National Championships. 

In 1998, Graves left NU to become the inaugural head coach at the University of Texas, before retiring in June 2014.
