Harry J. Barnes was inducted into the Hall of Fame for his accomplishments in the sport of basketball.
Barnes played one season with the San Diego Rockets of the National Basketball Association, and was the Huskies' leading man in the late sixties when they made the NCAA Regionals three straight years and posted a combined record of 59-21. As a senior, the dynamic Husky forward was an ECAC All East selection, and set a University record for points in one season with 458. Barnes finished his illustrious career in third place on the all-time scoring list with 1,114 points. At 6'3 Barnes' scoring repertoire included majestic jumpshots, soaring layups, and tap-ins over decidedly taller opponents. Northeastern hoop aficionados will recall the 1967 campaign when head coach Dick Dukeshire and his three primary weapons, Leo Osgood, Rick Weitzman and Barnes propelled the Huskies to an incredible 22-4 record, and an NCAA Division II berth. Barnes capped his career in the 1968 season, by leading the team in scoring with 17 points per game as the Huskies finished 19-9.
Following a record shattering career at Northeastern, Barnes was selected to the Olympic trials, played in the NBA and earned his degree in Business Administration in 1971. A native of Youngstown, Ohio, old number 21 is still active with various youth organizations in the Boston area, where he molded his game on asphalt playgrounds, with former pro stars like Roxbury's Jimmy Walker.
