John Maslowski started his rowing career at Northeastern University in 1969, four years after the rowing program began. He started in every varsity race from 1970 to 1973, and was a member of the first Northeastern team to win at the Head of the Charles. Maslowski was also a member of the first Northeastern varsity team to win the prestigious Eastern Sprints Regatta, which the Huskies won two years in a row (1972 and 1973).

Following his Northeastern career, Maslowski traveled to Nottingham, England for the Nottingham International Regatta, winning the gold medal in races against several international boats. He also was part of two straight Henley Regatta squads, reaching the finals of the Grand Challenge Cup in both 1972 and 1973, and was part of the 1973 team that won the national championship as the top collegiate crew in the nation. Two years later, Maslowski was a member of the 1975 United States team at the Pan-American Games in Mexico City.
