A prominent instructor of physical education, Kate R. Barrett was elected to the Hall of Fame for her accomplishments in college athletics and a distinguished career in physical education.
Barrett played for the South of England Lacrosse Team in 1960 and the U.S. Women's Lacrosse Touring Team in 1957. She was a member of the U.S. Field Hockey Team and the U.S. Lacrosse Team during the period of 1956 to 1965. Barrett received her Ph.D. degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1969 and went on to become a professor of physical education at the University of North Carolina. Barrett has published numerous articles in several physical education journals. She has taught physical education at the Roedean School in Sussex, England, Wellesley College and at Boston-Bouve'. She compiled a television course for elementary physical education - "Ready? Set....Go!" - that was used throughout the United States.
At North Caroline, in addition to her teaching duties, she chaired many committees including the Professional Preparation Curriculum and Screening Committee for Teachers Education. She directed the Teacher Education Center for Elementary School Physical Education.
She was a member of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education and Recreation, the United States Women's Lacrosse Association - she served as president from 1965-67 - and the United States Field Hockey Association.
