Mari Creatini, Class of 2007, has been elected to the Northeastern University Varsity Club Hall of Fame for excellence in the sport of field hockey.
Creatini was a two-time All-American who led the Huskies to four consecutive NCAA Tournaments.
Creatini earned a total of nine letters at Newton North High School in field hockey, ice hockey, lacrosse and track. In field hockey, she was a three-time Bay State Conference All-Star and conference MVP her senior year. She was also All-Conference in ice hockey and lacrosse.
In her freshman season of 2001, she made an immediate impact, scoring 13 points and being voted to the America East All-Rookie team. Northeastern went 16-7, defeated Delaware 4-1 to win the conference title and went on to the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
In her sophomore season, she really blossomed with 14 goals and eight assists for 36 points. She was elected to the Northeast Regional All-America team. In the conference tournament, she scored three goals as NU rolled over Vermont and Maine, and she was voted to the All-Tournament team. The team went 18-5, won the conference and defeated Connecticut 1-0 in the NCAAs before losing to Michigan State 2-1. A straight Dean’s List student, she was named to the National All-Academic team.
Creatini enjoyed a spectacular junior season. Her 29 goals and 14 assists for 72 points set a Northeastern season record and led the nation that year. She was elected All-America, America East Offensive Player of the Year, America East All-Tournament and Academic All-America. She was also a finalist for the Honda National Player of the Year award. The team went 17-6, won America East and made NCAAs.
Her senior season saw more laurels and triumphs. She had 19 goals and three assists for 41 points. This year it was “Captain Creatini,” and she became only the second Husky to be selected first-team All-America two years in a row. She was voted All-America East, America East All-Tournament and received the Jeanne Rowlands Award as Northeastern’s top senior female scholar-athlete. The team went 18-4 and won America East with Creatini scoring the game-winner over Boston University that earned her America East Championship Most Outstanding Player honors. In the NCAAs, the Huskies bested Connecticut and then fell to eventual national champion Wake Forest.
At the end of her career, she had set the NU record for most goals (67) and most points (162), marks that still stand. She was honored with All-America East twice and All-America twice. In her four years, the team amassed a 69-22 record, won four America East crowns and advanced to four consecutive NCAA Tournaments.
Creatini is a resident of Swampscott, Mass., and is an assistant estimator for Shawmut Design and Construction.
