Senior distance runner Brittany Moriarty of the Northeastern University women’s track & field team has been named Student-Athlete of the Week after starting the first-annual Jay Carisella Track & Field Invitational with a bang, winning the 5,000-meter challenge in 17:39.72.
The Andover, Mass. native competed in the first event of the day and dusted the field as the next-closest competitor finished over half a minute behind Moriarty.
Moriarty’s time not only stood as the 5K champion mark on Dec. 5, but now represents the second-fastest 5,000-meter indoor time in Northeastern history. Sophomore Kristen Martin currently holds the school record as the second-year harrier set the benchmark with a time of 17:28.97 at last year’s Husky Winter Carnival (the former name of the Jay Carisella Track & Field Invitational).
The senior is no stranger to success in the distance game as Moriarty led the Huskies in every race during the 2008-09 cross country season, ran the second-best indoor mile (4:54.45) in NU history and set Husky outdoor records in the 1,500-meter (4:31.82) and 5,000-meter (16:44.03).
Northeastern will compete at the Harvard Open on Saturday, Dec. 12 in Cambridge. It will be the Huskies last race before heading into 2010 when Northeastern picks up at the Dartmouth Relays on Friday, Jan. 8.
