Vermont 1, Northeastern 0

Northeastern lost a tough game to Vermont 1-0 tonight in a matchup that pitted the two top teams in America East against one another. Vermont now stands at 6-1 in conference play while the Huskies dropped to 4-2.

Keli Helgason scored for the Catamounts in the 74th minute of the game to break the 0-0 tie and the score remained 1-0 for the rest of the game. The Huskies had their opportunities, but Vermont goalkeeper Chris Shaver had some outstanding saves that preserved the victory.

The best of the Huskies' opportunities came when Petter Starnas was tripped on a breakaway. A free kick was awarded and taken by Anders Hoyem who tapped the ball to Petter Starnas. Starnas rifled a shot through a field of defenders but Chris Shaver came up with a great diving save. Then, with two minutes left, Hoyem received a cross right in front of the net but shot wide. As time ran down, it looked as if the Huskies might have had the momentum to tie it up, but nothing prevailed.

Northeastern's next matchup is Sunday against Hartford (2-2-2, America East) at Parsons Field at 1 p.m.
