BOSTON, MA - Northeastern lost its first conference game of the season on Oct. 2, falling 2-0 to Boston University at Nickerson Field. The loss drops the Huskies to 4-3 overall and 0-1 in America East.
The Terriers got on the board early in the match on a goal by Karl Ruegemer 17 minutes into the first half. Following the early goal, both teams went scoreless until the 84th minute of play when BU was awarded a penalty kick on a hard NU foul inside the box. Joachim Raland converted the penalty to give the Terriers the decisive 2-0 lead.
NU was unable to find the net despite outshooting BU 17-10. The best chance for the Huskies to tie the game came with approximately six minutes left in the second half, just prior to BU's second goal. Anthanasios Kirkopoulos sent an NU corner kick across the box to Trond Olsen who headed it right on target, but Terrier keeper Zack Thompson came up with an amazing diving save to thwart Olsen's effort.
The game was very physical from the start, with a total of 10 yellow cards being issued. NU received six yellow cards while committing 26 fouls; the Terriers received four cautions on 24 fouls. Allan Lewis recorded three saves in net for the Huskies while BU keeper Zak Thompson had nine saves on the evening.
