Junior midfielder Nate Houghton (Cambridge, MA) had a goal and an assist to lead the Huskies to a 3-1 win over Hofstra on Oct. 7 at University Field. The win improved Northeastern's record to 6-3 overall and 2-1 in America East, while Hofstra saw its four-game winning streak snapped as it slipped to 5-4-1 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
Houghton got the Huskies on the board at the 15:18 mark of the first half when he was in perfect position to tap in a rebound after Hofstra goalkeeper Justin Varrone (Holbrook, NY) saved a shot from Petter Starnas (Sjomarken, Sweden).
Just minutes later, Northeastern was forced to play a man down after sophomore back Oumar Thiam (Thies, Senegal) was red-carded. However, the game evened at 10 men apiece in the second half after Hofstra's Brian Dunleavy (Levittown, NY) was issued a red card for a hard foul at the 59:53 mark. Just 21 seconds later, Houghton sent a through ball to Phonethip Ketnouvong (Southbridge, MA) along the right side of the penalty area that Ketnouvong knocked home from 15 yards to put the Huskies ahead 2-0 at the 60:14 mark.
Senior forward Anders Hoyem (Oslo, Norway) gave Northeastern an insurance goal at the 69:11 mark when he took a pass from freshman midfielder Joe Parrish (Holbrook, MA) at the top of the penalty area and bent a hard shot into the upper right corner.
Hofstra pulled to within 3-1 with 13:39 left in regulation when sophomore back Richard Bigus (Farmingville, NY) made a long run up the left sideline and sent a crossing pass in front that senior forward Patrick Geraghty (Dublin, Ireland) headed in from close range.
Varrone had three saves for Hofstra, while senior goalkeeper Allan Lewis (Unionville, Ontario) had four saves to pick up the win for the Huskies.
