TOWSON, MD - Towson defeated Northeastern 1-0 to win the America East Championship Saturday at Towson Field and advance to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in the history of the program.
Todd Demares scored the only goal of the game in the 56th minute off a pass from Randy Tolson. Tolson fed DeMares down the right side of the field inside the box where he and NU defender Blair Carroll converged on the ball. DeMares cut the ball back on the endline to beat Carroll and fired a shot into the upper right side of the net.
Towson nearly extended the lead to 2-0 in the 75th minute. Junior Machel Millwood blasted a ten-yard shot from point blank range but Lewis made a sprawling save to keep the Huskies within one goal.
The Huskies increased the pressure and had several chances to add an equalizer down the stretch. They thought they had tied the game at the 82:54 mark when Nate Houghton sent an Antha Kirkopoulos cross past Tigers keeper Chris Hurley from five yards out. However, the score was disallowed on a controversial offsides call and the score remained 1-0.
Despite the loss, NU head coach Ed Matz was very pleased with the effort his team gave. "I thought we played strong in the first half and came out even stronger in the second half. I was very pleased with how our team kept their composure after going down a goal. We fought hard and had several opportunities to score, but we couldn't get anyone in front of the keeper to challenge for the ball. DeMares scored a great goal for the Tigers and that turned out to be the deciding factor in the game."
Hurley had six saves in goal for the Tigers, while Allan Lewis recorded four saves in net for the Huskies.
Phonethip Ketnouvong, Anders Hoyem and Lewis were named to the America East All-Tournament team in an awards ceremony following the match.
