Northeastern 2, Hartford 1

Junior Atha Kirkopoulos scored the game winner in the 94th minute to give the Huskies a 2-1 win over Hartford on Wednesday at Parsons Field. The win is Northeastern's first conference victory of the season and snaps a three-game losing streak.

Kirkopoulos knocked the ball away from Hartford goalie Ryan Carr (six saves), who came too far out, and then placed it into the empty net for the win in OT.

In a very well-played match by both teams, the Huskies got on the board first as Kirkopoulos dribbled down the middle of the field and found senior Nate Houghton on the left side. Houghton controlled it and worked his way to the center of the field, taking two defenders with him, before setting up a trailing Bennie Prueske with a nice drop pass. Prueske then capitalized by sliding the ball past Carr for a 1-0 lead at the 24:21 mark.

Hartford bounced right back, however, just a little over two minutes later. Asaf Lubezky fed his brother Alon, who was racing down the left side. Alon then beat his defender and tied the score by sending it to the back post.

Neither team could take the lead in the second half, even though the Huskies had many key opportunities. With just 7:30 left, Prueske found Houghton, who blasted a shot from 20 yards out that was deflected over the crossbar by Carr. The two teams then headed into overtime, marking the fourth time in the last five home games that the Huskies have gone into extra time.

"I thought that we played really well tonight, with an especially strong second half," said NU head coach Ed Matz. "We wanted to play this game with urgency, not wanting to give up three points at home."

Northeastern goalie Sergio Saccoccio had two saves in net and recorded the win, which raises the Huskies' record to 4-6-2 overall and 1-1-0 in America East action. NU will next play at Stony Brook on Saturday at 1 p.m. in another conference battle.
