Box Score Junior co-captain Joe Parrish scored the lone goal in the Northeastern men's soccer game on Wednesday afternoon, leading the Huskies to a 1-0 win over conference rival New Hampshire at Parsons Field.
The win improves NU's record to 7-5-3 overall and 4-2-1 in America East Play, while UNH falls to 6-8-0 overall and 1-5-0 in the conference.
The first half played out evenly, as both sides had chances on offense. The Huskies attacked early, getting a few good scoring opportunities from senior co-captain Atha Kirkopoulos and sophomore Michael Cipriano. In the 15th minute, Kirkopoulos put a hard shot on net that freshman goalkeeper Brian Levey saved. On the deflection, Cipriano broke through and put a quick shot on net, but Levey came up with a second nice save.
New Hampshire came back and pressured later in the half, putting together a few good chances of its own. The Huskies kept the Wildcats off the board with some key defensive plays and a couple nice saves from sophomore goalkeeper Sergio Saccoccio. NU held the slight advantage in shots at 7-6 in the period.
In the second, the Huskies were able to capitalize on a New Hampshire foul outside of the box in the 54th minute. Kirkopoulos put a low blast on net that was deflected to the foot of Parrish, who finished off the play with his second game-winning goal of the season.
Northeastern looked to its defense the rest of the way, which was able to shutdown the Wildcat offense and limit them to just two shots in the period. NU outshot UNH, 10-8, in the match. Saccoccio posted five saves for the Huskies on the way to his fifth shutout of the season, while Levey recorded four stops in the loss.
Northeastern hits the road this Saturday for an America East matchup with Vermont at 3 p.m. on Centennial Field.
