Box Score The Northeastern men's soccer team defeated UNC-Wilmington, 2-1, Friday night at Parsons Field. NU senior midfielder Tom Heimreid nailed the game-winner on a penalty kick in the 82nd minute.
The first half was full of Seahawk attacks. Dustin Efird missed wide on a free kick midway through the first. In the 20th minute Tim Masters hit a shot passed an approaching Sergio Saccoccio to put the Seahawks ahead.
A couple minutes later in the half, Saccoccio made an acrobatic save to keep the damage at one. NU freshman Andrew Konopelsky switched from his usual defense position up to forward. He supplied most of the Husky offensive pressure in the first half.
Northeastern came out of the locker room and took charge of the flow of the game. Only four minutes into the new half, sophomore midfielder Padraig Tangney headed a freshman Nick Patrikis cross for the equalizer. That was his first goal of the year.
The Huskies kept on attacking the Seahawk zone keeping the ball in Wilmington territory most the time. Konopelsky and Patrikis had multiple shots go wide.
In the 82nd minute, Konopelsky drove into the box drawing a foul on a Seahawk defender. Heimreid ripped the penalty shot home and the Huskies took a 2-1 lead with less then eight minutes remaining.
The Seahawks refused to give up, forcing four corners in under five minutes and almost tying the game but Saccoccio came up with another clutch save.
UNC Wilmington received two yellow cards. The Seahawks had a 7-4 edge on corners.
Seahawk keeper Brad Knighton made one save on the night while Saccoccio had three stops.
The Huskies are still in the playoff hunt and will try to make one more step forward against Georgia State on Sunday, Oct. 23 at Parsons Field at 1 p.m. Sunday will be senior day and the following seniors will be honored: Jeff Gannon, Tom Heimreid, David Downing, Sergio Saccoccio and Jay Betley.
