Box Score The Northeastern men's soccer team won for the second time in three days shutting out Georgia State, 2-0, at Parsons Field on Sunday afternoon. Junior defenseman Matt Handy scored the game-winner while sophomore Greg Kilkenny added the insurance goal.
On a cold and damp day, NU said farewell to seniors Jay Betley, David Downing, Jeff Gannon, Tom Heimreid and Sergio Saccoccio. They went out with a win and kept the Huskies in the playoff hunt.
NU came out putting the pressure on the Panther defense. Kilkenny had two chances that he couldn't capitalize on while GSU mustered up one shot that was wide. Northeastern out shot its opponent 16 to five.
In the 56th minute Handy scored his first career goal on a loose ball that was hit by freshman forward Andrew Konopelsky.
Fifteen minutes later Kilkenny would nail a 20-yard shot in the lower right corner for his team leading fifth goal of the season.
The Panthers managed an attack in the 75 and 85-minute marks but couldn't manage to get a shot on goal. GSU's Russ Jones had the team's only shot on net.
Yellow cards were given to Konopelsky and Panther midfielder Joe Devito. NU held a 6-2 edge on corners. Saccoccio managed one save for his sixth shutout of the season. GSU keeper Carvalho Filipe stopped five shots.
The Huskies resume their postseason quest at Virginia Commonwealth on Friday, Oct. 28.
