Box Score The men's soccer team (2-8-2, 0-3-1 CAA) snapped its five game losing streak on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Parsons Field, as the Huskies played to a 1-1 tie with the Tribe of William & Mary. Junior Greg Kilkenny gave NU an early lead in the 14th minute, but W&M sophomore Brock Jones capitalized on a rebound seven minutes later to knot the game at 1-1. Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the second half or in overtime. NU and W&M have now tied in the only two contests with each other.
Northeastern looked sharp early on Sunday afternoon despite the hard rain at Parsons Field. Nearly two minutes into the contest, freshman Brendan Ennis received a behind the back pass from Kilkenny but his shot was stopped by W&M junior keeper Brennan Wergley. Then at 13:01, freshman Alexander Volk found a streaking Kilkenny with a high lead pass, and the junior striker chipped the ball over Wergley before an incoming defender arrived, giving NU an early 1-0 advantage.
Less than a minute later, the Tribe threatened to tie the game as sophomore Doug McBride blasted a shot from the top of the circle. NU freshman keeper Mahmoud Talaat leaped for the shot and got a piece of the ball, sending it just over the net. Talaat was not as fortunate on the next Tribe attack.
In the 21st minute, W&M sophomore leading scorer Andrew Hoxie took a hard shot from the top of the circle that Talaat stopped easily. But the keeper bobbled and dropped the ball, allowing Jones to pounce on the rebound for an easy W&M goal.
With 13 minutes to play in the half, Hoxie nearly put the Tribe on top, but his blast from the corner of the box went wide into the side of the net. Then with three minutes remaining, Talaat again almost lost the ball after stopping a free kick attempt, but he was able to recover and snatch the ball away from the opposition.
The Huskies got the first good opportunity of the second frame. Kilkenny was awarded a free kick in the 49th minute but his shot was turned aside by Wergley. Five minutes later as the Tribe were on the attack, Talaat again had difficulty with the wet conditions. After making a save he dropped the ball in front of an empty net, but W&M freshman Price Thomas could not capitalize on the opportunity before senior co-captain cleared the ball for NU.
In the 58th minute, freshman keeper Joe Monthey came into the game to replace Talaat, who had been having difficulty handling the ball in the rain. Then at 60:34, Thomas of the Tribe was given a yellow card, setting up Daryl Brack with a free kick. Brack's ensuing shot somehow sneaked through the W&M defense but was stopped by Wergley.
Both teams had chances throughout the remainder of the second half but the goalkeepers were up to the challenge. Monthey made two saves and Wergley turned aside four shots in the second frame.
The first overtime session opened with two corners for NU and one for W&M, but neither team managed to get a shot on net with the opportunities. But with 1:43 to play, NU junior Ahmed Talaat got a golden opportunity to end the game. From just inside the box, Talaat drove a shot to the upper left corner but again Wergley was there to make the leaping save.
In the final overtime period, neither team recorded a shot on net, but the Tribe nearly sent the Huskies home with another loss in the final seconds. Senior Pat Scherder found himself wide open in front of the net and headed a high ball toward an empty net, but the ball rolled just wide to the right.
Wergley finished the game with six saves for the Tribe. Talaat stopped four shots for NU before being replaced by Monthey, who made two saves.
W&M outshot NU 17-14 and 8-7 in shots on goal. The Tribe also held a slight 9-8 advantage on corners.
The Huskies hit the road again for a two game trip. NU will first battle UNC Wilmington on Fri., Oct. 6 before playing at Georgia State on Sun., Oct. 8. The games will begin at 7 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
