Northeastern Huskies

Men's Soccer

Virginia Commonwealth 0, Northeastern 1

Box Score The men's soccer team (4-9-2, 2-4-1 CAA) won its second consecutive game at Parsons Field on Friday night, as the Huskies edged Virginia Commonwealth (4-10-0, 2-5-0 CAA), 1-0. Freshman Alexander Volk scored in the 68th minute to lift the Huskies to a crucial conference victory. Seniors Daryl Brack and Brian Koslosky picked up assists on the goal.

The Huskies and Rams both had trouble generating offense in the first half, as both teams looked out of sorts and failed to record a shot on goal.

Northeastern came out faster in the second frame and finally managed to put some pressure on the Rams' defense. Just three minutes into the half, junior striker Greg Kilkenny fired a bad-angle shot just wide of the net. Then in the 57th minute, Kilkenny got another opportunity on a lead pass, but VCU sophomore keeper Andrew Dykstra leaped to make the save.

Dykstra was tested again with 24 minutes to play. Senior co-captain Daryl Brack found freshman Brendan Ennis on a corner kick, but Ennis' shot to the top right corner was stopped by Dykstra. The Huskies continued to pressure the Rams and finally broke through at 67:10, as freshman Alexander Volk beat Dykstra one-on-one for his third goal of the season. Brack and Koslosky assisted on the play. It was Koslosky's first collegiate point.

Freshman keeper Mahmoud Talaat stopped the only two shots he faced, both in the second half, to preserve NU's second consecutive victory. Dykstra also made two stops for the Rams.

NU outshot VCU 10-7 and 3-2 in shots on goal. The Huskies also finished with a 3-2 advantage on corner kicks.

The Huskies will look to extend their winning streak to a season-high three games on Sunday, as they return to Parsons Field to host James Madison in another important CAA contest. NU is 0-3-0 all-time against the Dukes, including a 2-1 loss last year at JMU. The game will begin at 1 p.m.
