Box Score The men's soccer team (5-9-2, 3-4-1 CAA) extended its winning streak to a season-high three games with a 2-0 conference victory over the No. 23 Dukes of James Madison (8-4-2, 3-3-2 CAA) on Sunday afternoon at Parsons Field. Junior striker Greg Kilkenny capitalized on a free kick in the 11th minute and Matthew Laning added an insurance goal at 87:45, as the Huskies picked up their first ever win against James Madison (1-3-1). Senior co-captain Daryl Brack assisted on both goals for NU. The Huskies have not allowed a goal in 186:15.
The Huskies got the first scoring chance of the game in the ninth minute on Sunday. Daryl Brack took a free kick from 35 yards out and landed the ball by freshman Alexander Volk inside the box. Volk then drove a shot left but JMU senior keeper Kevin Trapp slid to make the save.
Northeastern was awarded another free kick in the 11th minute and the Huskies made it count this time. Brack tapped the ball to Kilkenny, who drove a low shot around the wall of Dukes' defenders and past a diving Trapp to give NU an early 1-0 lead. With the goal, Kilkenny matched his 2005 total of five goals. The junior striker has opened scoring in four of the last five games.
With three minutes remaining in the half, sophomore Nicholas Patrikis crossed the ball to Brack, who headed the ball just wide of the net. Looking to tie the game before halftime, senior and CAA leading-scorer Kurt Morsink sent a free kick high over the crossbar.
Morsink opened the second half with another point-blank opportunity. After making a move around a Northeastern defender, Morsink kick the ball hard and low toward the lower left corner of the net. Freshman keeper Mahmoud Talaat reacted just in time, diving for the ball and just reaching it to make the save in the 51st minute.
Moments later, after Talaat reached to grab a deep throw in by JMU senior Mike Tuddenham, the keeper collided and flipped over one of his own players. Talaat remained in the game.
The Dukes continued to pressure NU and came very close to tying the game in the 66th minute. Freshman Jean Tshimpaka streaked down the left side of the field and crossed the ball to a wide open Kurt Morsink in front of the net. Morsink's initial shot was blocked but junior Lasse Kokko followed it up with another shot that somehow missed the net wide to the left. Following the flurry of shots, Mahmoud Talaat appeared to have been shaken up and left the game. Freshman Joe Monthey came in to replace Talaat in net.
Monthey was quickly tested, and he got some help from the post. Kurt Morsink drilled a shot that was deflected past Monthey but the ball hit off the left post and went out of bounds in the 69th minute. The Dukes came right back five minutes later. Kurt Morsink went around a defender and passed the ball to sophomore Nick Zimmerman. Zimmerman then cut through two more NU defenders and fed the ball to junior Tristan Murray, who shot the ball low to the left but Monthey made a great diving save to keep the Huskies ahead 1-0.
Then with just 2:15 to play, the Huskies got an insurance goal to seal the victory. Following a Northeastern throw in, Daryl Brack collected the ball and fed freshman Matthew Laning, who headed the ball high into the left corner of the net before Trapp could get there.
Freshmen Mahmoud Talaat and Joe Monthey combined to make four saves in an impressive all-around performance in goal. Talaat made three saves in the first 67 minutes of the game before Monthey came in and made one stop. Trapp turned aside four shots for JMU.
The Huskies outshot the Dukes 11-9 and 6-4 in shots on goal. James Madison had three corner kicks to NU's two.
Northeastern plays its third consecutive CAA home game on Friday, Oct. 20 against Delaware. The Huskies, now 3-1-1 in their last five games, will look to extend their winning streak to four games as they continue their late postseason push.
