Box Score The men's soccer team (8-10-2) was unable to answer after an early Patriots' goal and the Huskies were shut out, 1-0, in the CAA quarterfinals at No. 4 seed George Mason (12-5-1) on Tuesday night. Sophomore Dan Ames headed home what would prove to be the game-winning goal at 24:59, as the Patriots snapped NU's six-game winning streak and ended Northeastern's season. The Patriots advance to the semifinals and will face No. 1 seed Towson on Friday.
The Huskies got off to a slow start and looked frustrated by Mason's physical play early on Tuesday night. Just two minutes into the game, junior Padraig Tangney was tagged with a yellow card. At 5:40, senior captain Jacob Weitz drove a shot from deep center that sailed over the net.
In the 16th minute, George Mason senior Josh Fleming crossed the ball to senior Francis McCardle, who took a low shot toward the right side of the net. Freshman keeper Mahmoud Talaat dove to his left to make the save.
The Patriots continued to pressure the Huskies and at 24:59, sophomore Lucas Pardew sent a deep free kick into the box and sophomore Dan Ames headed the ball, redirecting it past Talaat into the lower left corner of the net from eight yards out. It was Ames' second goal of the season.
Following Mason's goal, NU started to pick up the pace and create some action in front of the Patriots' net. Then with about ten minutes to play in the half, the Huskies got their best chance of the half. Greg Kilkenny was awarded a free kick from just above the center of the box. He drove a shot toward the net but it missed wide right.
Immediately upon the start of the second frame, Mason streaked down the field and nearly doubled their lead. McCardle got an opportunity from the left corner of the net from just five yards out, but Talaat was there to make a huge save and keep the Huskies within a goal.
Three minutes later, Mason threatened again, this time with junior Jordan Mault all alone in front of the net. Mault drilled a shot but Talaat made another brilliant save, keeping NU in striking distance. The rebound was quickly cleared amid a scramble in front.
In the 63rd minute, NU junior Ahmed Talaat worked to get around his defender low in the box but Mason's defenders collapsed and cleared the ball back toward the midfield.
Mault had a chance for his second goal of the game at 65:45. His shot from just above the top of the box was stopped, as Talaat dove to his right to make the save.
Junior Greg Kilkenny had a shot from the top of the box with 9:30 left to play but his bid was stopped by freshman goalie Sean Kelley. Then with 4:45 remaining, Ahmed Talaat had a golden opportunity to tie the game. He drove a hard shot toward the left side of the net, but Kelley leaped to his right and made a great save to preserve Mason's 1-0 lead with time running out on the NU's season. The Huskies were unable to mount sustained pressure the rest of the way out and the Patriots held on for the 1-0 win.
Freshman keeper Sean Kelley played well and made six saves in the win to record his CAA-best 11th shutout of the season. As good as Kelley was, Mahmoud Talaat may have been better for NU. Talaat finished with nine saves, including two very tough stops early in the second half to keep NU in the game. The Patriots outshot Northeastern 18-11 and 10-6 in shots on goal and held a 6-2 advantage in corners.
George Mason will face No. 1 seed Towson in the CAA semifinals on Friday.
