Northeastern Huskies

Men's Soccer

Northeastern 2, UNC Wilmington 3

Box Score The men's soccer team (2-9-2, 0-4-1 CAA) traveled to the Port City on Friday night for the first time since joining the CAA, but the Huskies allowed a late goal and fell to the Seahawks of UNC Wilmington (6-5-1, 1-4-0 CAA), 3-2. With the win, the Seahawks claimed their first conference victory, leaving Northeastern as the only team left without a CAA victory. Junior Greg Kilkenny and freshman Lars Okland scored for the Huskies, who overcame a 2-1 second half deficit before senior striker Rick Henderson tallied the game-winning goal for the Seahawks in the 83rd minute.

Kilkenny, who scored in the 14th minute last game against William & Mary, got the Huskies on the board first for the second straight game on Friday. The junior striker collected a loose ball just inside the box and spun around before drilling a shot past UNCW keeper Brad Knighton into the top right corner of the net for his team-leading third goal of the season.

But at 29:33, the Seahawks struck back, as freshman forward Pedro Pereira stunned NU keeper Joe Monthey with a goal from 35 yards out.

Still tied at 1-1 in the second half, another UNCW freshman chipped in early to put the Seahawks on top. Midfielder Kirk Hudgins received a pass from Henderson inside the box and snuck the ball just inside the right post past Monthey at 52:52.

Freshman Lars Okland had the answer for Northeastern nearly twenty minutes later. The Asker, Norway native settled a drop pass from junior Ahmed Talaat and beat Knighton to the left from close range, knotting the game at 2-2. It was Okland's first collegiate goal.

As has been the case throughout much of the season, the Huskies fell victim to the heroics of their opponents. Henderson, who assisted on the Seahawks' second goal, capitalized on a short pass from Tim Masters in front of the net at 82:13, recording his second goal of the season to help secure the victory for UNCW.

The Seahawks outshot the Huskies 11-7 and 5-4 in shots on goal. UNCW also finished the game with a 2-1 advantage on corner kicks. Monthey and Knighton each made two saves in the contest.

Northeastern has another chance to pick up its first CAA victory of the season on Sunday, as the Huskies travel to Georgia State for a 1 p.m. contest at Silverbacks Stadium. NU will then return home for three-game homestand, beginning with a contest with Virginia Commonwealth on Fri., Oct. 13.
