Men's Soccer

Northeastern 1, Quinnipiac 0

Box Score The men's soccer team opened up the 2006 season with a 1-0 win over Quinnipiac at Parsons Field on Friday night. Senior defenseman Matt Handy broke the scoreless deadlock 17 minutes into the second half when he pounced on the rebound of junior striker Greg Kilkenny's shot off the crossbar. With the victory, the Huskies extended their winning streak against the Bobcats to six games. During that span, Northeastern has outscored Quinnipiac 13-2.

The Huskies came out fast and were outshooting the Bobcats 3-0 early. Just over 14 minutes into the game, junior Ahmed Talaat found some breathing room inside the box but was pressured and was only able to put a weak shot on goal. Quinnipiac was able to weather the storm early on and managed to leave the first half tied despite being outshot 7-1.

Northeastern had the first great scoring chance of the second frame when Kilkenny found freshman Alexander Volk with a pretty drop pass, but Volk's shot just missed to the left side of the net. With 30 minutes left in the game, Quinnipiac sophomore Graciano Brito exploded through the Northeastern defense and tried to shoot the ball into the open right side of the net, but freshman goalkeeper Mahmoud Talaat turned the shot aside.

Just a few minutes later, Kilkenny capitalized on a Quinnipiac foul as he drilled a free kick off the crossbar, setting up senior Matt Handy for an easy rebound goal.

Northeastern continued to control the game late while limiting the Bobcat's chances. NU freshman Kyle Nasman had two quality scoring chances in the final 20 minutes but was unable to finish. With just under nine minutes to play, freshman Matthew Laning dodged a defender and had another opportunity to provide Northeastern with an insurance goal but his shot missed just right of the net.

The Huskies outshot the Bobcats 17 to 6, and five to three on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Mahmoud Talaat made three saves and picked up his first collegiate win for Northeastern. Quinnipiac goalie Paul Fleck stopped four shots in the loss.

NU finished with a 7-2 advantage on corners.

The Huskies travel to Orono, Maine on Tuesday, Aug. 29 to face Maine at 3 p.m.
