Box Score The men's soccer team struck late to edge Maine 2-1 and spoil the Black Bears home opener Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field. The victory marked the first time Northeastern has started the season 2-0 since 2001. Junior Ahmed Talaat tallied his first collegiate goal in the 86th minute to break a 1-1 deadlock. Freshman Alexander Volk also recorded his first collegiate goal to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead midway through the first half.
It was a good sign for Northeastern when freshman midfielder Alexander Volk deposited the rebound of junior Greg Kilkenny's shot into the back of the Maine net early in Tuesday's game. Volk, who went down on opening day with what appeared to be a leg injury, was very impressive for the second straight game as he put NU up 1-0 in the 27th minute.
Maine answered almost 12 minutes later, as freshman Philip Reed beat NU freshman goalkeeper Mahmoud Talaat with a shot from 15 yards out.
Both teams had several chances to go ahead early in the second frame. Freshman Lars Okland almost gave the Huskies the lead in the 65th minute, but Maine junior goalie Giacomo Brunino turned his shot away. Finally at 86:17, junior Ahmed Talaat came up with a loose ball inside the box and beat Brunino to the right for the game-winning goal. Okland picked up an assist on the play.
The Huskies outshot the Black Bears 14-7 and improved to 10-11-1 all-time against Maine. Mahmoud Talaat picked up his second collegiate victory while making three saves. Brunino stopped six shots for Maine.
Each team took six corners, with all six of Maine's coming in the second half.
Northeastern returns home to Parsons Field to take on Providence College on Friday, Sept. 1 at 3 p.m. The teams have not met since 1993.
