Men's Soccer

Rhode Island 1, Northeastern 1

Box Score The men's soccer team tied Rhode Island 1-1 on Sunday afternoon at Ohiri Field, as both teams failed to break the deadlock through two overtime sessions. The Huskies, playing in their second game of the Harvard Invitational, ended a three-game goal drought when sophomore Kyle Nasman knotted the game at 1-1 with is first collegiate goal in the 71st minute. Northeastern is now 2-3-1 this season and Rhode Island is 1-2-2. Freshmen Brendan Ennis and Lars Okland received All-Tournament honors for NU.

After a first half during which neither team recorded a shot on goal, it was Rhode Island that got on the board first in the second frame. At 64:02, junior Lukasz Tumicz came up with the ball following junior Geoff Cameron's free kick, and Tumicz flicked the ball into the net at the far post from inside the box.

Just seven minutes later, the Huskies answered right back. Sophomore Kyle Nasman controlled a rebound and drilled a shot from inside the box that deflected past freshman keeper Chris Pennock to knot the game 1-1 at 70:49.

Despite outshooting Northeastern 14-3 in the second half, URI could not solve NU freshman goalie Mahmoud Talaat, who made six saves during the second frame. The Huskies then nearly stole the game with just 18 seconds left in regulation, but URI sophomore defenseman Kevin Hamill cleared the ball off the goal line to send the contest into overtime.

Rhode Island had the best chance of the first extra session, but Mahmoud Talaat again came up huge, this time with an impressive diving stop on a header with about two minutes to play.

In double overtime, URI again threatened to end the game. Junior Dawid Badecki headed a ball off the near post and then sent another header just wide. The Huskies were outshot 5-2 in overtime and 3-0 in the second extra session.

Rhode Island outshot Northeastern 25-8 and 8-2 in shots on goal. NU keeper Mahmoud Talaat had yet another solid outing in net with seven saves. Chris Pennock had to make just one save for URI.

Each team took six corner kicks in the game.

The Huskies finished the Harvard Invitational 0-1-1 with a 4-0 loss to Harvard and a 1-1 tie with Rhode Island. NU Freshmen Lars Okland and Brendan Ennis and URI freshman Domenic Petrarca and junior Geoff Cameron received All-Tournament honors.

Northeastern will try to get back in the win column on Fri., Sept. 15 at New Hampshire. The game will begin at 4 p.m. NU is 6-16-1 all-time against UNH and lost 1-0 last year at home.
