Box Score The men's soccer team (2-7-1, 0-2-0 CAA) rallied from a 3-0 second half deficit on Sunday at Towson (5-1-2, 1-0-1 CAA), but the Huskies could not muster the equalizer after NU freshman Matthew Laning and junior Ahmed Talaat scored consecutive goals in the 73rd and 74th minute. Sophomore Mosca Cisneros scored twice for the Tigers. Northeastern has now dropped seven of its last eight games, including its first two CAA contests.
It took the Tigers only 59 seconds to get on the board at Towson Center Field, as junior Pat Healey headed home a pass from junior teammate T.J. Thompson. Then at 14;15, Cisneros took a feed from sophomore Nino Mangione and buried the ball past NU freshman keeper Mahmoud Talaat from six yards out.
Down 2-0 early, the Huskies continued to battle but were unable to solve Towson senior keeper Greg Flaherty, who made eight saves in the opening frame. Talaat stopped seven shots for NU in the first half.
In desperate need of the next goal, Northeastern found itself in a bigger hole early in the second half. Cisneros capitalized on a pass from senior Sebastian Haensel at 55:56, beating Talaat from five yards out and giving the Tigers what would prove to be the game-winner.
Appearing to be headed for another shutout loss, NU suddenly found itself back in the game, as Matthew Laning and Ahmed Talaat scored consecutive goals at 72:13 and 73:24, respectively. Laning scored his first collegiate goal from 10 yards out on a pass from Talaat to put NU on the board. Then Talaat scored a goal of his own, capitalizing on a breakaway for his second goal of the season. Freshman Alexander Volk picked up an assist on the play.
Unfortunately for the Huskies, Greg Flaherty continued to play well down the stretch and he closed out the game without allowing another goal. He made seven saves in the second half and 15 in the game. Talaat was also impressive, making 13 saves in the contest.
Northeastern outshot Towson 26-20 and 17-16 in shots on goal. The Huskies also finished with a 7-1 advantage in corners.
The Huskies return to Parsons Field for just the third time this season on Friday, Sept. 29, to host Old Dominion (7-1-0, 2-0-0 CAA). NU has picked up one of its two wins at home this season, but Old Dominion will present a difficult challenge. The Monarchs are riding a seven game winning streak and are currently ranked tenth by College Soccer news and 13th by the coaches NSCAA/adidas. The game will begin at 6 p.m.
