Box Score The men's soccer team failed to score for the third consecutive game as the Huskies were outmatched and fell to Harvard 4-0 Friday afternoon at Ohiri Field. Northeastern managed just one shot on goal in its third loss in as many games.
The Crimson struck first at 26:31 of the first half when Desmond Mitchel one-timed a pass from freshman Andre Akpan by NU freshman keeper Mahmoud Talaat to put Harvard out in front early. Harvard continued to pressure Northeastern, but Talaat made four saves in the half to keep the Huskies within striking distance.
It wasn't long before Harvard broke the game wide open in the second half. In the 58th minute, sophomore Michael Fucito rushed past the NU defense and went in on a breakaway, beating Talaat with a shot that deflected off a Husky defender. Less than ten minutes later, Fucito struck again, this time heading a cross pass from the far post into the back of the net. Akpan and senior Jeffrey Chivers picked up assists on the play.
Already in full command of the game, Crimson freshman Kwaku Nyamekye collected his third goal of the season on the rebound of Walter Diaz's direct free kick at 76:18.
Harvard outshot NU 18-5 and 11-1 in shots on goal. Harvard junior keeper Adam Hahn had to make just one save in the win, while Mahmoud Talaat turned aside seven Crimson shots in the loss.
Harvard also had a 6-4 advantage on corners.
Northeastern will try to end a three-game scoreless drought against Rhode Island in the second game of the Harvard Invitational on Sunday. The Huskies have not won or scored since winning 2-1 at Maine on Aug. 29.
Loyola Marymount defeated URI 2-1 earlier on Friday and will take on the Crimson in the final game of the Invitational at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
