Northeastern Huskies

Men's Soccer

Northeastern 3, UNC Wilmington 1

Box Score After a tough stretch on the road the Northeastern men's soccer team was happy to be back at Parsons Field as it topped UNC Wilmington 3-1 on Friday.

The Huskies were on the attack early and made the most of their second chances. Just seven minutes into the game Senior Ahmed Talaat got off a shot from inside the box that glanced of the post. With the seahawk goalkeeper out of position, Greg Kilkenny was able to sneak in his second goal of the season for a 1-0 lead.

The Seahawks answered back in the 19th minute when freshman Daniel Roberts took a corner kick that bounced in front of the net until Nassim Bournhi got control of it and put is by NU goalkeeper Scott Partridge.

With three minutes to go in the first half Northeastern took back the lead, again on a rebound, Freshman forward Santiago Bedoya led Greg Kilkenny with a nice pass in traffic, and Kilkenny had his shot saved by a diving Brock Duckworth. With the goalkeeper on the ground in out of position, junior forward Lewis Ehrlich shot the ball in from the right side to the Huskies the halftime lead. The goal was the second of the season for Ehrlich, and Kilkenny notched his league-leading sixth assist.

“To get that goal going into halftime was big for us,” said Assistant Coach James Greenslit. “It's always nice to score early, it takes a lot of pressure off.”

Both the Huskies and the Seahawks played a tighter second half that saw much less scoring opportunities. “The defense did a real nice job of calming down and not letting that first goal get to them,” said Greenslit. “They battled and kept the lead for us. Anytime you get a win in conference you take it.” The Huskies are now 1-2 in conference play.

With a minute to go in the game the Seahawks pulled their goalkeeper to try to put pressure on the Husky defense. But only seconds later Ahmed Talaat stole the ball and passed it to sophmore midfielder Alexander Volk, who beat a defender and knocked it into an empty net to clinch the victory. It was the first goal of the season for Volk and Talaat registered his second assist of the game.

Sophomore Scott Partridge played only his second full game of the season at goalie, but made five saves and allowed only the one goal to earn the victory.

The Huskies are now 3-1 at home and have scored 11 of their 12 goals at Parsons. “Not having to travel, plus playing on a familiar surface is definitely an advantage for us,” said Greenslit. “ Playing in Virginia and Carolina is different than playing up here.”

Northeastern returns to action on Sunday to host Georgia State at 1 p.m. at Parsons Field.
