Virginia Commonwealth 3, Northeastern 1

Box Score The sixth seeded Northeastern Huskies fell to the third seed, Virginia Commonwealth on Tuesday by a score of 3-1 in the Qaurterfinals of the CAA Tournament at Richmond, Va.

The Rams had an early opportunity in the fifth minute when Jorit Loehr got a took a cross five yards out but couldn't put it in as the NU defense jump in front of his shot attempt. There were no good scoring opportunities for either team in the next ten minutes as play went back and forth.

In the 17th minute Loehr took a long pass from Owusu Sekyere streaking up the left side as he got past NU goalkeeper Mahmoud Talaat and sent a shot towards the goal that freshman defender Matt Sanford tried to re-direct but couldn't get to it in time to prevent a 1-0 for the Rams.

The Rams stayed on the attack for the rest of the half. Only two minutes later VCU induced Talaat out of the goal, but the Northeastern defense again blocked Loehr's shot attempt.

Northeastern then got the ball on the Rams side of the field but failed to head in several crossing attempts in front of the net.

Santiago Bedoya sent a cross to Ahmed Talaat five yards out with 17 minutes to play in the second half but the Ram defense was able to clear the ball. With 12 minutes to play in the half Northeastern got the ball in front of the Ram's goal, and after several passes in traffic Matt Laning crossed a ball in front of the net that Greg Kilkenny lunged at and headed in for the 1-1 tie. The Rams immediately went on the attack, but again the Northeastern defense put away two close calls.

The next 10 minutes belonged to the Rams, but Northeastern was able to take the 1-1 tie into the half. Northeastern only managed one shot on goal in the half, while Jorit Loehr took all three of VCU's shots on net.

Ten minutes into the half Matt Sanford stopped a break away attempt by knocking the ball out of bounds, but Sven Meusch threw it in to the Northeastern box where Peer Jaekel got a head on it and Dirk Dittrich sent it past Talaat for the 2-1 lead.

Owusu Sekyere proved to be the spark for the Rams, as he constantly kept VCU on the attack in the second half. The sophomore forward took two shots three minutes apart, both saved on lunging attempts by Talaat. Sekyere then took another shot from 15 yards out, which Talaat came out to grab, but he couldn't hang on to it, and Meusch put it back in to give VCU the 3-1 lead with 10 minutes to play.

The Rams out shot Northeastern in the second half 16-3,and held a 20-10 advantage for the game. Corner kicks were even at five a piece.

Talaat finished the night with six saves, while Ram goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra didn't record a save in the victory. Northeastern finishes the season with a 8-10-1 mark while VCU improves to 12-5-2. The Rams will take on Old Dominion in the Semifinals in Virginia Beach on Friday.
