Box Score Greg Kilkenny scored a goal and added an assist as the Huskies got by Towson on Sunday by a score of 2-0 at Parsons Field. Senior Day for Northeastern was just that, as both goals were scored and assisted by seniors.
The win brings the Huskies to 8-8-1 (6-3-1 CAA) on the season and guaruntees Northeastern a spot in the CAA playoffs. The Tigers fall to 9-7-1 (6-4-0 CAA).
Northeastern out shot Towson 13-5 in the first half, creating many opportunities in front on the net. The Huskies held an impressive 11-1 advantage on corner kicks in the half.
The Huskies got on the board in the 34th minute after a foul on Towson. Forward Greg Kilkenny launched a penalty kick from 30 yards out that senior defender Padraig Tangney headed into the upper-left part of the goal for the 1-0 lead. Tangney, the team's leader on defense, now has career highs in goals (two) and assists (two) for six points on the season. Kilkenny now has nine assists, which is second best in the CAA.
"What a great day for our seniors," said Assistant Coach James Greenslit. "Those guys have led the team all this way, and I couldn't think of a better way for that game happen."
The Husky defense played tight and physical, making it easy on goalkeeper Mahmoud Talaat, who only had to make two saves in the half. "I can't say enough about how well our defense has played," said Greenslit. "I can't think of any great opportunities Towson had, they just don't get beat."
Northeastern stayed on the attack in the second half, as senior Ahmed Talaat had two shots in the first 10 minutes stopped on diving saves by Tiger goalkeeper Billy Chiles.
A foul on Alexander Volk just outside of the penalty box gave Towson its best opportunity of the night, but junior midfielder Matt Beckman just missed wide left and the Huskies kept their 1-0 lead.
Northeastern tacked on an insurance goal with 15 minutes left when Greg Kilkenny booted in a rebound off an Ahmed Talaat saved header. The goal was Kilkenny's sixth of the season, and it gives him the team lead in points with 21.
Mahmoud Talaat ended the day with four saves and his fifth shut out of the season. "He always comes up with the big save," Greenslit said. "Talaat and the defense have really progressed as the season has gone along."
The Huskies are now 6-1-1 in their last eight games and 7-1 when playing at Parsons. Northeastern will play the season-finale on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Hofstra in Hempstead, N.Y.
