Box Score The Huskies fell in the final regular season game of the year on Thursday, a 1-0 loss to Hofstra in Hempstead, N.Y. Northeastern will now prepare for the CAA tournament, the Huskies have drawn the sixth seed and will face Virginia Commonwealth on Tuesday.
Hofstra gained the lead in the 29th minute when Richard Martinez sent a long pass from behind midfield to Chris Cox. The senior midfielder beat Husky goalkeeper Mahmoud Talaat to the ball and pushed it through for the only goal of the game.
Northeastern played even with Hofstra throughout the contest, and even ended up with an advantage in shots on goal (6-5). The Huskies best two chances came from sophomore defender Lars Okland, who in the 57th minute sent a header from a corner kick to the far post that got by Pride goalkeeper Tom Johansen, but a Hofstra defender was able to halt his attempt. Okland again threatened with a header in the 80th minute, but this time he missed just wide.
Senior forward Ahmed Talaat led the Huskies with five shots, and Greg Kilkenny put all three of his shots on target for Northeastern. Mahmoud Talaat made four saves for Northeastern, the Husky keeper had his streak of three straight shut outs snapped in the loss.
Northeastern took three more shots than Hofstra in the second half, along with four more corner kicks. The team took a 7-4 advantage in the corners overall. The Huskies finish the season with an overall record of 8-9-1 and a CAA record of 6-4-1.
The Huskies must now look ahead to Virginia Commonwealth, a team Northeastern beat earlier in the year by a score of 3-1. "They are a very good team," said Assistant Coach James Greenslit. "We won 3-1, but don't let the score fool you, it was a lot closer than the score dictates."
With a 7-1 record at home, the Huskies were almost unbeatable at Parsons this year. With only one win away from home this season, the good news the Huskies can take to Richmond, Virginia is that lone victory came against VCU.
"Our first goal this season was to make the CAA playoffs," Greenslit said. "Now that we have done that, it is time to focus on a new goal and try to advance as far as we can."
The game will start at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Sports Backers Stadium in Richmond, Va.
