Box Score The men's soccer team fell to the Holy Cross Crusaders on Tuesday at Parsons Field by a score of 1-0. It was the first loss at home this year for the Huskies.
With about three minutes to go in the first half Holy Cross gained control of the ball around midfield. Junior defender Alejandro Melean launched a pass from about forty yards away, and freshman forward Alex Schweitzer one-timed it past Husky goalkeeper Mahmoud Talaat for the only goal of the game.
Both teams struggled to find good scoring opportunities as the defenses on each side played tough. Holy Cross recorded three shots on goal and Northeastern totaled the same amount. "I thought the defense played well for the most part besides the one goal," Northeastern Assistant Coach James Greenslit said. "They didn't give up a lot of chances."
Greg Kilkenny came upon a loose ball in front of the net 14 minutes into the second period, but Crusader defender jerry Dickinson used his body to stop Kilkenny's attempt to tie the game.
Yellow cards were given early and often in what was a physical and closely fought battle. Holy Cross was tagged with four yellow cards while Northeastern received two. Northeastern's record fell to 2-4 with the loss and Holy Cross improved to 3-2.
The Huskies saw Alexander Volk, who was named to the 2007 preseason All-CAA team, on the field for the first time in three games. That should be a good sign for the team's upcoming three game stretch away from home.
The men's soccer team returns to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Massachusetts in Amherst, Mass. at Rudd Field.
