Box Score Northeastern got an early goal from Santiago Bedoya and a late goal from Lewis Ehrlich to defeat the UNC Wilmington Seahawks 2-0 Saturday night at Parsons Field.
The Huskies defense has been the highlight of the season so far for the Huskies as they have shutout six of their last seven opponents. With this performance, Northeastern finds itself on a seven game unbeaten streak where they have gone 4-0-3.
The Huskies played a dominant first half as shown by their zero shots allowed. NU got a goal from Bedoya in the 4th minute of the game off a great lead pass from Lars Okland. Ehrlich had some opportunities to put the game away in the first half, but misfired on two shots.
"That first half was probably the best 45 minutes we've played all season," said head coach
Brian Ainscough. "We let up no shots and got behind the defense and created opportunities to score goals. It was as good as it gets."
In the second half, the Huskies kept the pressure on and were able to get several chances to put the ball in net. It was not until the 88th minute that they finally capitalized when Ehrlich received a pass from freshman Mike Kennedy to put the Huskies up 2-0.
"Lewis and Mike are finally starting to get some chemistry and it's showing on the field," said Ainscough. "They keep getting good looks and it bodes well for our offense when they do."
The goal is Ehrlich's fifth goal on the season, which leads the team. Ehrlich also had six shots on the day, which put his total up to a team-leading 39 on the season.
Keeper Scott Partridge played to his sixth shutout this season, which leads the CAA. He made two saves today and made the plays when he was challenged.
Northeastern finds itself atop the CAA standings at 3-0-1 and head coach
Brian Ainscough attributes that accomplishment to all the hard work his team has put in this season.
"I couldn't be happier for the guys," said Ainscough. "They work so hard to get to where they are now and are playing with high confidence. Our team defense is what is really playing great right now. Everyone is contributing."
Northeastern is back in action on Wednesday as the Huskies travel to Towson to face the Tigers at 3 p.m.
