Box Score The Huskies' offense failed to score a goal for the third consecutive game as they lost to George Mason in the CAA championship match at Wilmington, N.C. on Sunday afternoon. The Patriots scored in the 38th minute on a goal by Kwame Adjeman-Pamboe assisted by Lucas Pardew.
The Huskies are now 7-5-9, 5-2-4 and will have to rely on receiving an at-large bid to make the NCAA Tournament.
Northeastern was able to keep a red-hot Patriot offense to only one goal, but could not get one of their own in the match. The Patriots came into the game with two-straight five goal performances.
George Mason controlled the ball for a majority of the first half as they outshot the Huskies 11-2. The Patriots had the game's first opportunity to score in the 10th minute when Pardew had an opportunity from 10 yards out, but fired a shot wide of the net.
The Huskies answered with a quick counter attack as Volk took the ball up the field and fired a shot that hit the side of the netting. Volk was named to the All-CAA third team, the league announced on Thursday.
George Mason had another great opportunity stopped by the Husky defense as Pamboe made a nice move on an NU defender and had a clean shot stopped by Scott Partridge, who made six saves in the match. The Patriots' finally got a shot to go in when Pardew faked out NU defender Jonathan Batista and crossed the ball into the box where Pamboe was able to find the back of the net for his ninth goal of the season.
The Patriots came out storming in the second half as they recorded four shots in the first three minutes of play. Pamboe had two chances to score for George Mason early in the half as he had two shots from inside the box. Partridge was able to save one, while the other missed over the crossbar.
The Patriots were forced to play the last 26 minutes down a man as Ryan Garcia got his second yellow card of the game. NU's best chance came when Alexander Volk took a shot from 20 yards out that deflected off a George Mason defender. Lars Okland took the rebound and took a shot from 10 yards out, but Patriots' keeper Sean Kelley made the save to keep the Huskies off the scoreboard. Kelley had three saves on the day.
The Huskies were outshot 19-8 in the match as the speedy Patriot attack proved to be too much for the great Husky defense. The Huskies came into the game with three consecutive shutouts and only one goal allowed in their last five games.
The 48-team field for the NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament will be announced sometime between 6:00 and 6:30 p.m. on ESPNews on Monday.
