Huskies fall to UNCW in CAA Championship match

Box ScoreBox Score

The third-seeded Huskies fell to the first-seeded Seahawks in Wilmington, 1-0 on Sunday as their playoff run came to an end. Although NU outshot their opponent 16 to 7, the team was not able to convert the chances.

The first half showcased the defensive prowess of both teams. The two goalies, NU's Scott Partridge and UNCW's Brock Duckworth, entered the match ranked first and second in the CAA in goals against average.

The Huskies were able to keep the ball in the Seahawks' end for most of the first half. Despite outshooting their opponents 6 to 3 in the frame, it was UNC Wilmington who had the best scoring opportunities. In the 38th minute, a cross found the head of Indy Smith but his effort clanged off the cross bar and the game remained tied.

With no score at half time, the pressure from both sides increased in the second half. Northeastern once again outshot their opponents in the period, 10 to four but Wilmington was able to move the ball deeper into the Huskies' half.

With 30 minutes remaining a poor clearance from NU nearly gave the Seahawks the lead but the defense held to keep the score knotted at zero.

In the 68th minute, Northeastern's Santiago Bedoya laid a perfect cross into the head of Andre Ciliotta but Ciliotta's header was just over the cross bar. It was one of seven shots for Ciliotta who led the squad.

In the 82nd minute Ciliotta lined up another chance, this time from Matt Laning. His header flew just high yet again and both sides remained scoreless.

Solid Huskies' defense held the Seahawks to very few shots as the squad tried to muster the elusive first goal. Two more chances in the final twelve minutes would nearly earn the Huskies the lead but a diving save from Duckworth on another Ciliotta shot and an attempt just wide from CAA Rookie of the Year Don Anding would yield no score.

It wasn't until the 86th minute that a deep throw in from UNCW's Christian Davidson would find Nassim Berhouni whose third goal of the season would earn the victory.

After the match, three Huskies were named to the CAA All-Tournament team for their efforts over the weekend.

All-CAA second team selection Lars Okland was named to the squad after leading the Huskies in the middle in both CAA Championship matches.

Matt Sanford, who earned All-CAA third team honors joined Okland after anchoring an impressive Huskies defense.

Senior keeper Scott Partridge was also named to the team after an excellent tournament in goal.
