With just one more game remaining in the regular season, the Huskies tied the James Madison Dukes on Monday, 1-1. The tie moves NU to 7-2-1 in CAA play while the Dukes end up at 4-4-2.
It was uneventful first half for both teams as just seven total shots were taken in the frame. NU failed to put a shot on net in the period while the Dukes posted just one.
The second half was a different story as both sides upped the pace. Northeastern and James Madison took eight and six shots respectively and five were put on net. It was the Dukes who struck first in the 63rd minute as CAA Rookie of the Week Markus Bjorkheim converted a through-ball from CJ Sapong into a 1-0 lead. The Huskies would not take the deficit lying down as it took them less than two minutes to even the match at one.
Santiago Bedoya dished a pass in the middle to
Mike Kennedy who ripped a 28-yard volley past Dukes' keeper Justin Epperson into the upper-right corner of the net. The goal ties Kennedy for the team lead in points with 12. He is second in goals with four.
The solid defense showcased in the first period would make a comeback following the goals and neither team would score for the rest of regulation time.
The first extra frame saw just two shots from James Madison and none from the Huskies. The game remained tied at one as the ten extra minutes trickled away. The second overtime however was a different story. It featured a surge from Northeastern that saw five shots taken, three on target.
Epperson would stop all three shots on goal and the Dukes would manage none of their own as time expired with a 1-1 final score.
The tie eliminates Northeastern from a chance to host the conference tournament and clinches the title for UNC Wilmington. The Huskies will still be in the tournament as they clinched a spot this past weekend.
In the final match of the regular season the Huskies will host Virginia Commonwealth on Saturday, Nov. 7 at 6 p.m. at Parsons Field.
