The Northeastern men's soccer team won 3-1 at Drexel Wednesday, keeping their postseason hopes alive.
Sophomore
Don Anding led the way for the Huskies, scoring two goals helping to propel NU to victory.
The Huskies struck right out the gates with freshman
Dante Marini intercepting Drexel's pass on a free kick in their own zone. After intercepting the ball, Marini fed it through the middle to the left side of the box allowing for Anding to beat the keeper on a ball placed to the far right of the net.
“Our boys came out a lot cleaner tonight. We set the tone from the beginning with Don's goal in the opening minutes and didn't look back,” said head coach
Brian Ainscough.
Just twelve minute after Anding's goal, freshman
Laurence Braude lifted a ball over the defense to junior
Mike Kennedy who finished the play with a goal from the right side.
“Mike played great for us tonight. He worked the attack and was able to assist in putting the game away not only with his goal, but also in assisting Don's second goal,”said Ainscough.
With the Huskies up 2-0 they continued the pressure, outshooting the Dragons 8-1 in the half and putting three of those shots on goal, ultimately dominating the offensive chances.
Coming out in the second half the Huskies put the match well out of reach behind Anding's second goal.
In the 71st minute Kennedy set up the score with a run to the right side of the box that drew the attention of Drexel's defenders. He then slid a pass across the face of the goal where Anding waited to receive the ball and put it in net.
With the Huskies up 3-0 they looked to keep their guard up, however NU's
Oliver Blum was denied his fifth shutout of the season with 40 seconds remaining in the game.
Behind Anthony Bafile's corner kick, Dan Vignola was able to head the ball passed Blum, preventing the Dragons from going home scoreless.
The Huskies were tied for shots in the second half with the Dragons, going 6-6.
Northeastern played stellar defense on the day, limiting the Dragon's scoring chances and only forcing Blum to make two saves on the day.
“Our whole team played really well. They understood that this game was important for us, in order to remain relevant in the postseason hunt,” said Ainscough.
Don Anding scored his first goals of the season on the day and has recently seen an increased offensive roll at the forward position in
Ricardo McDonald's absence. Previous to McDonald's injury, Anding found himself in a newly found defensive roll that allowed for him to create and make plays from behind the attackers.
With the victory at Drexel, Northeastern sits just one point out of being tied for third-place in the CAA.
The Huskies look to help their case at reaching the postseason on Saturday when they travel to Old Dominion for a 7 p.m. start.
“We have a meaningful game ahead of us and these boys still have a lot to play for,” said Ainscough.
