The Huskies earned their first win of the season Sunday as they concluded the 35th annual Mayor's Cup by dominating Hartwick, 3-0.
“These last few games have been against some top notch non-conference opponents. It's great to get our first win of the season against a solid Hartwick squad,” said Head Coach
Brian Ainscough.
Northeastern's scoring effort was led by senior
Ryan Burnham who scored his first of two goals in the 26th minute on an assist from
Josh Semerene and
Nikko Lara. Burnham's other goal came on a kick from 25 yards out, in the 85th minute.
“We're hoping Burnham's first two goals of the season will be the first of many to come,” said Ainscough.
Huskies junior
Mike Kennedy continued his great play with five shots in the game, including a score in the 84th minute on a direct kick.
“It was great to see Mike get his first goal of the season,” said Ainscough.
Northeastern once again put together a shutdown defensive effort that limited Hartwick's opportunities throughout the game.
“This is our second game in a row where our defense has been stellar. Sanford and Ennis led the effort and were able to finish the game with a shutout. After losing a close one to Syracuse in extra time on Friday, we
really wanted to get this win,” said Ainscough.
The defensive efforts of
Matt Sanford and
Brendan Ennis were recognized by the tournament as they were both voted to the All-Tournament team.
In net for the Huskies was
Oliver Blum who mad eight saves and earned his first shutout of the season.
“Next up is Fairfield. We're looking to keep it rolling and hope as we continue this season our forwards can be a little more clinical in their style of play,” said Ainscough.
Northeastern travels to Fairfield on Friday for a 7 p.m. showdown against the Stags.
