Behind a 13th minute goal from junior forward
Mike Kennedy, the Northeastern Huskies defeated the Fairfield Stags, 1-0, on Friday night.
The road win is Northeastern's second-straight and wraps up a five-game road trip that saw the Huskies go 2-3-0.
Kennedy wasted no time putting Northeastern in front. Sophomore forward
Don Anding fed a ball from the center into the right side of the box, where Kennedy blasted a shot from 15 yards out that beat the keeper for the 1-0 lead. Kennedy's goal gives him the team lead in points with five (2-1-5).
“Don's pass was just as good as Mike's shot that put us upfront,” said head coach
Brian Ainscough. “We made great plays early and gave ourselves the chances to pull ahead throughout the game, but their defense made it tough to score.”
The game was a defensive struggle throughout, as eight yellow cards were given out, four to each team.
“We played a very good defensive team. We had to break them in at the beginning, and as the game progressed we found ourselves creating opportunities,” said Ainscough.
Northeastern's defensive effort continued to be stellar with goaltender
Oliver Blum recording his second shutout of the season.
Co-captains
Brendan Ennis,
Matt Sanford and
Santiago Bedoya anchored a defensive backfield that only two shots in each half for the Stags.
The Huskies finished their early season road schedule by pulling off two straight victories before they return to Parsons Field to take on Providence in their home opener.
“We've been road warriors so far. Its great to head home as we look to bring it back to .500,” said Ainscough.
