Northeastern men's soccer lost it's home opener in a close one to Providence, 1-0.
The Huskies fall to 2-4-0 on the season as they prepare for CAA conference play.
From the start of the game the Friars came out ready to perform while the Huskies looked sluggish and out of sync for most of the first half.
“We looked like we were still asleep out there,” said head coach
Brian Ainscough. “Typically we don't come out that slow, but that effort in the first half was painful.”
Providence attacked the Huskies from the beginning whistle, with Matt Marcin scoring the lone goal of the game on an assist from Wilder Arboleda in the third minute, beating goalkeeper
Michael Gallagher from the top of the box.
Gallagher had three saves on the day in his first start of the season.
“There was indecisiveness on the defensive end that led to their goal. We came out flat. You can't come out flat in any game and expect to leave with a win,” said Ainscough.
Coming out of the locker room in the second half the Huskies looked much more poised and ready to attack, often focusing their scoring effort on crosses over the middle of the box.
Friars goalkeeper Jhojan Obando had 10 saves on the day, and was able to often pick the ball out of mid air on the Huskies' crossing chances.
Northeastern outshot Providence 19-8 on the game, however were unable to find the net when it mattered most.
In the games 83rd minute
Mike Kennedy found himself one on one with the Friars' goalkeeper, however Obando was able to deflect the shot over the top post in what would prove to be the Huskies best scoring chance of the night.
“Mike played a good game for us. He was able to stay around the ball and created opportunities for us all night,” said Ainscough.
As time expired the Huskies found them the gift of a free kick off of a Providence foul, giving them a final opportunity to score. Northeastern was able to center a good-looking ball, however Providence cleared it from the box as time ran off.
“We didn't have great chances, but still had plenty of moments to make something happen,” said Ainscough.
Northeastern's next game will be Saturday at 7 p.m. as they travel to Richmond, Va. to take on Virginia Commonwealth in what will be their first game of CAA play.
