Northeastern alum Brad Thiessen (2006-09), in his second season as the Wilkes-Barre Scranton goaltender of the American Hockey League, was named a starter on the Eastern Conference All-Star Team for the 2011 AHL All-Star Classic presented by Capital Blue Cross on January 30-31 in Hershey, Pa.
The Aldergrove, B.C. native is considered one of the AHL's top netminders as Thiessen heads into the break leading all goaltenders with 17 wins (17-3-0) and initiated the 2010-11 campaign with an eight-game winning streak. Thiessen's inclusion marks the third-straight year in which the Penguins placed one of their own in the all-star starting lineup.
Thiessen is the 21st Penguins player to be named to an All-Star Team and just the second Penguins goaltender, joining Dany Sabourin (2006). NU's famed backstopper joins teammate Dustin Jeffrey, who was recently featured in HBO's series “
24/7” after getting called up to Pittsburgh, as the two Penguins on the Eastern Conference All-Star Team.
Wilkes-Barre Scranton tops the AHL heading into the break with a 30-8 mark.
Thiessen was the Huskies' key cog in their 2009 NCAA Tournament run when Northeastern won a program-best 25 game and finished with a 25-12-4 record, reaching as high as No. 2 in the country.
Through 21 games, Thiessen has posted a 2.06 goals against average with a .921 save percentage, turning away 498-of-541 shots in the first half.
