Northeastern suffered its first conference loss of the season on Saturday, losing to the Dukes of James Madison, 2-0 and only mustering one shot on goal. The Huskies fell behind early and could not rebound, as they were shutout for only the second time this season.
The first half did not get off to a good start for the Huskies. Barely ten minutes had passed when Northeastern fell behind after Paul Wyatt's fourth goal of the year. Wyatt took control of the ball and ripped a shot into the right side of the net from about 16 yards out, the first time in three matches the Huskies have failed to score first.
Northeastern responded well to going down a goal however, and entered half-time holding the edge in shots and corner kicks but still with nothing to show for it.
In the second half, the Huskies continued to struggle to find their feet offensively, as the game turned increasingly physical. The two teams combined for 28 fouls on the night, with Northeastern picking up 15 and James Madison being whistled for 13 infractions of its own.
With about 15 minutes left, James Madison got a second goal to effectively kill off the contest. Paul Innes, the Dukes leading scorer received a headed pass from Jamal Umar following a Christian McLaughlin cross. Only ten yards from goal, Innes buried his shot cleanly past
Oliver Blum for his sixth tally of the season.
The loss drops Northeastern to 5-3-1, while the Dukes improved to 6-1-1 with the win, all six of which have come at home for James Madison. The Huskies will look to bounce back from the loss when they travel to Delaware on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. kick-off.
