Northeastern defeated the Hofstra Pride, 3-2, in an important mid-season conference match-up on Wednesday. Three different players were on the score sheet for the Huskies, who saw their record improve to 7-4-1 (3-2-0) with the victory.
The game did not get off to the best of starts for the Huskies, as the Pride got on the score sheet within 15 minutes of the opening kick-off. Tyler Bottie received a pass from Shady Saleh and chipped a shot over
Oliver Blum to give Hofstra a 1-0 lead.
Northeastern responded well to conceding the goal however, with
Mike Kennedy forcing a save from Roberto Pellegrini in the 23rd minute.
Two minutes later,
Josh Semerene pulled the Huskies back level. After a Hofstra turnover in the defensive third, Semerene found himself on a clean break towards goal. The senior forward coolly slotted his finish home past Pellegrini for his third tally of the year, and his second game-tying goal of the season.
Back on level terms, Northeastern began to push for a second goal before half time. The hard work was rewarded in the 36th minute when
Dante Marini scored his team-leading fifth goal of the year. Marini worked his way into space along the top of the box before unleashing a left-footed effort that he buried into the net, giving the Huskies a 2-1 lead.
The second half was short on action until the last ten minutes of the game.
In the 83rd minute, Northeastern had an opportunity to put the game to rest with a free kick in a dangerous offensive position. Kennedy stepped up to take it and beat Pellegrini to give the Huskies a 3-1 lead. The goal came unassisted and was Kennedy's third tally of the season.
It seemed like Northeastern would be able to cruise home to victory until a Shaun Foster goal from a set piece in the 89th minute pulled Hofstra within one. That was as close as the Pride would get however, as the Huskies saw out the remaining time on the clock to earn their third conference win of the season.
Northeastern is back action when it travels to UNC-Wilmington on Saturday at 7 p.m.
