Northeastern tripped up by Delaware, 2-1

Box Score Box score

The Huskies were defeated by conference rivals Delaware, 2-1, on Wednesday afternoon. Dante Marini scored his fourth goal of the season in the contest, but it was not enough to overturn a two-goal deficit created by Delaware's Evans Frimpong.

Barely six minutes into the contest, Frimpong, Delaware's leading scorer, tallied his sixth goal of the season to open the scoring and put the Blue Hens ahead. Frimpong found himself one-on-one with a Husky defender, beat him, then advanced on keeper Oliver Blum before slotting the ball past him with a shot to the left post.

Frimpong was not finished there, however, as he doubled the Delaware advantage in the 23rd minute.  Midfielder Ben Raymond split the Northeastern defense with a through pass that Frimpong ran on to, before calmly placing his shot into the top right corner.

The Huskies were in need of a response to get them back into the game, and just as he has done all season, Marini was on hand to provide Northeastern a lift. The diminutive sophomore let fly with a long-range effort from roughly 40 yards out that caught the Blue Hen's keeper off-guard as it soared over his head and into the net to pull the Huskies back within one.

The goal gave Northeastern a much needed boost as the match moved towards the half-time interval. The Huskies began to apply more pressure in the attacking third of the field, with Ricardo McDonald looking particularly threatening after forcing two saves out of Blue Hens keeper Brandon Paul.

In the second half, Northeastern pushed hard for the equalizer from the outset, peppering the Delaware net with shots and forcing more saves from Paul. With less than 20 minutes left, the Huskies' comeback effort was given a boost when Delaware's John Dineen was dismissed after he received his second yellow card of the game.

Northeastern immediately began to press forward in response to gaining a numerical advantage, with forward Mike Kennedy coming on to replace midfielder Hamadi Cantave. Kennedy almost made an immediate impact after re-entering as well, but his shot was saved well by Paul.

With the game ticking towards the last ten minutes, Northeastern continued its relentless attack. McDonald and Kennedy both had shots saved by the keeper in the closing minutes, as the Huskies were unable to level the score, despite holding the edge in shots on goal, 9-3.

With the loss, Northeastern drops to 5-4-1 while the win lifts the Blue Hens to 7-1-1. The win also marks the first time Northeastern has lost to the Blue Hens in Delaware. The Huskies are back in action when they return home to do battle with the Georgia State Panthers. That game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start on Saturday.
